A Complete Manual for Conducting International Flight Operations

Approach Categories

Approach Categories

There is some confusion on the topic of approach categories. When it comes to TEPRS VS. PANS Ops approach categories. Let’s start with a question,

Do TERPS and PANS Ops use the same speeds to define approach categories? The answer, YES. However, the methodology for how it is calculated is different. Next question, for both TERPS and Pans Ops is the approach category based on the maximum landing weight? The answer, YES.

Circling

The next question, does PANS Ops define the maximum speed for visual maneuvering while circling differently? The answer, YES. Why is this? The reason that the speed for visual maneuvering while circling is higher is that the protected area is larger.
